Return of Football leagues

European soccer is back with La Liga, Serie A and EPL fixtures

After the Bundesliga lead the way last month, June will see the return of more of Europe’s most popular soccer leagues. La Liga, Serie A and the EPL are back in action this month and the three returning leagues have some stunning matchups on offer.

La Liga – back 11 June

Spain’s premier soccer league shut its doors on 10 March with Real Sociedad hanging onto a tenuous fourth place on the log beating Eibar 1 – 2. Since then, the bastions of Spanish football from the Bernabéu to the Nou Camp have been painful reminders of a bygone era.

No longer. On 11 June, Spanish soccer returns with Messi already spotted gracing the fastidiously kept grass of the Barcelona’s home turf. La Liga is set to kick off with Sevilla taking on Real Betis. Although Sevilla are well behind second-placed Real Madrid, the club is in a tight-race to remain in third with just three points separating four clubs.

In other exciting opening weekend fixtures, Athletic Club take on Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid take on Eibar, and Mallorca won’t see their relegation prospects helped when they face Barça.

As the league’s action pushes into the new week, there will be La Liga action from Monday to Thursday. This run will be concluded with Valencia trying to get within striking distance of the top three as they face Real Madrid. Los Blancos will also need the win if they hope to keep within reach of Barcelona at the top of the log.

English Premier League – back 17 June

The last EPL game before the league was shut down was played on 9 March and saw Leicester City trounce Aston Villa with four unanswered goals. Although a week behind La Liga, when the EPL opens on 17 June the opening days promise some exciting matchups.

The Wednesday 17 June opener will see the promising newly promoted Blades take on a Villa side desperate for a win. After this tantalising starter, the action kicks up to high gear with Man City taking on the Gunners at the Etihad. Arsenal are languishing in ninth and would relish a win against second-placed City. Just two days later, Tottenham face United in a matchup that Spurs will be desperate to win.

As the first weekend back rolls around, Villa will be given no respite as they face Chelsea. In other weekend action, Brighton will take on Arsenal, Wolves will travel to London Stadium to face West Ham, and Everton will be a small bump in Liverpool’s march to the 2019/20 EPL title.

Serie A – back 20 June

The Italian Serie A shut down on 9 March with Sassuolo cementing Brescia’s place firmly at the bottom of the log with a 3 – 0 victory. As the last major European league to reopen, the Serie A has some catching up to do.

The league opener on 20 June will see an all but inconsequential battle between middle of the log Torino and Parma facing off at the Olimpico di Torino. The action won’t speed up much through the first weekend as Inter take on Sampdoria, Lecce face Milan and Bologna draw the short straw opening with Juventus.

After the weekend’s action, the following week will feature Serie A action almost daily as the league attempts to make up for lost time. The week’s action will see Napoli take on Verona, Milan face Sassuolo, and Lecca come up against a second top-three team in days when they travel to Allianz to meet Juventus.

2019/20 English Premier League

2019/20 English Premier League
Tottenham Hotspur v Manchester United
Match Day 30
Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
London, England
Sunday, 15 March 2020
Kick-off is at 18h30 CAT
Tottenham Hotspur will square off with Manchester United in an English Premier League match at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on March 15.

Spurs were held to a 1-1 draw by Burnley away in their previous league game which was played on March 7.
They are now winless in three matches in the league having registered one draw and two defeats against Chelsea, and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Spurs recorded a defeat against Wolves in their last home league match, but prior to that, they had won two league games in a row at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Meanwhile, United secured a 2-0 win over Manchester City at home in their previous league game which was played on March 8.
The win stretched the Red Devils’ unbeaten run to five matches in the league having recorded two draws and three defeats.

They are undefeated in their last two away matches having registered a draw with Everton and a victory over Chelsea.
Scott McTominay, the United midfielder, says they should not get carried away after defeating City as they look to maintain their good form in the Premier League.”We have won a game today, fantastic, but it is the next one and the next one after that. We can’t get too carried away we have to keep going and keep pushing for the Champions League,” McTominay said.
“Credit to the boys – they were top drawer today. We had a sticky first 15-20 mins but you can see how much it means to the boys. It is a game we have to take confidence from but, in the coming weeks, we have to really go for some proper results and keep this run going.”
The last league meeting between Tottenham and United was on the 4th of December 2019.
The Red Devils secured a 2-1 win over Spurs in an encounter which was played at the Old Trafford Stadium.

He had publicly indicated his preference to move to Premier League leaders Liverpool but they were unwilling to pay the release clause in the current climate.

Werner's Bundesliga stats this season
That allowed Chelsea to move in for their number one forward target, and the 24-year-old is happy to play for Frank Lampard's side. His priority has always been to sign for a Champions League club where he can play regularly.
Werner is set to join Hakim Ziyech, who is joining from Ajax for £33m on July 1, as new additions at Stamford Bridge this summer following their transfer ban being lifted by FIFA in December last year.
Chelsea were unable to sign players last year and opted not to bring in any acquisitions in January, instead focusing on their main targets this summer.
The club are also interested in bringing in a new left-back, with Leicester's Ben Chilwell their number one target.

Timo Werner is set to leave RB Leipzig for Chelsea
Analysis: No surprise Werner in such high demand
Sky Sports' Nick Wright...
"Werner's name has long been linked with Liverpool, but they were not the only Premier League club said to be monitoring him.
"It is hardly surprising that he is a player in demand. Over the course of the last four years with RB Leipzig, the 24-year-old has established himself as one of the most exciting young players in the Bundesliga.
"This season has been his best yet, with 31 goals scored in 40 games so far, taking his overall total for RB Leipzig to 92 in 154 appearances. For the German national side, he boasts a total of 11 goals in 29 games.
"His RB Leipzig tally for this season includes four goals in the Champions League, one of which came during Leipzig's 1-0 win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in February.
Also See:
• PL trio have 12 days to trigger Werner release clause

• Werner on target as Leipzig return to third

• Thommo: Werner would challenge Liverpool front three

• Leipzig dominate to knock hapless Spurs out of CL
"The majority of Werner's goals have come from the central striking position this season, but he is tactically flexible - RB Leipzig have used nine different formations in the Bundesliga this season - and he is also comfortable playing in wide positions, particularly when cutting inside from the left.
"Another factor in Werner's favour is his age. The forward has already amassed closed to 300 senior appearances since making his professional debut for Stuttgart in 2013, but he only turned 24 in March."
