United Secures Champions League

A victorious finish for United at Old Trafford this past Thursday evening as they smash Chelsea 4-1 securing them a spot in next season’s Championship League

Chelsea got thrashed during their 90min battle as Casemiro, Martial, Fernandes and Rashford all scored for the home team.

Chelsea only managed to get in a last min goal with a goal from the Portuguese forward, Joao Felix.

Back in August all seemed lost to Erik ten Hag’s team when they lost their home game to Brighton. However, United got their head in the game and haven’t lost a single home match in the Premier League season since then. Their last game for the season will be against Fulham this Sunday at Old Trafford.

This was a goal that was set by the Dutch coach after arriving from Ajax. A goal that was quickly achieved after starting only last April. A credit that is well deserved.

Man United won their 6th Carabao Cup after beating Newcastle in the final 2-0 in late Feb this year. In 7 days’ time, they will face City in the final for the FA Cup at Wembley Stadium. This has been a really encouraging season for the Red Devils.

United only needed 1 point from these last 2 games to obtain their spot in the top 4. Not only did they manage to score that one point but ended up making 6 in total from their win.

Mudryk’s early miss was punished by Casemiro’s header 6 min into the match.

Marcus saw his 30th goal of the season after Bruno’s penalty. Unfortunately, Antony had to be carried out on a stretcher and replaced with Garnacho in the 70th min.

Early in the night, Eriksen took the free kick for United. The Brazilian midfielder Casemiro’s leaped into the air and with a header powered the Red Devils into quick lead. A quick off-side check from VAR who then confirmed the first goal of the night.

Their score doubled in extra time just before the halftime whistle when Sancho’s cutback was swopped out for a goal by Anthony Martial.

20min later the French striker got substituted out and taken off the field on a stretcher.

A penalty goal from 12 yards away pushes the home team further up the scoreboard and away from Chelsea possibly seeing a win for the night. This was THE goal that confirmed their spot in the Champions League, all thanks to Bruno Feranandes.

The first yellow card of the night is seen given to both sides. Chelsea midfielder Fernandez who reacts poorly to United defender Malacia as Sancho gets stuck in the middle of the argument.

The yellow doesn’t dampen United’s mood as Rashford strikes the ball into the net moments later.

A consolation goal from the 23-year-old Chelsea forward, Joao, minutes before the final whistle doesn’t seem to change any of United’s wins tonight. United moves up into third place on the table, 3 spots better than last season with one game left.

Will Fulham be able to beat the Red Devils this Sunday? Place your bet on Betway!

Second semi-final City v Madrid

Last night we saw the second leg of the Champions League semi-final take place at the Etihad Stadium. After last week’s match ended in a draw, both teams were looking at finishing the game with a definite winner who will then face Inter Milan in the final on the 10th of June.

In their last 5 meetings, The Blues have only lost once against Real Madrid under Pep’s management. City battled to win any of their first 4 matches between the 2012 to 2016 seasons.

During their UEFA Champions League season, Madrid hasn’t managed to win any of their last away games. In fact their lost 2 out of the four.

In their last 2 away games, Real Madrid faced English football teams in the knockout stages. They managed to win both times during the UEFA Champions League. Only once has there been a team with three consecutive away game wins against an English team during the knockout stages. They not only did it during the 2013-14 season, but Barcelona did it again in the 2015-16 season.

Lyon was the last away team to win on City home Turf during the Champions League Season back in September 2018. Since then City has won 25 home games. Only 2 teams have ever had a better score than City. Barcelona consecutively won their home games 38 times from 2013 to the 2020 season. Bayern Munich totaled 29 home game wins between 1998-2002.

Wednesday’s game also saw another record broken as Carlo Ancelotti coached his 191st game in the Champions League season. He surpassed Alex Fergusons’ record of 190 games back when he still managed Man United from 1986 - 2013. Ancelotti also celebrated his 50th game as manager of Real Madrid. The second manager to reach his 50th game with 2 teams. He managed Milan for 73 games from 1987-1992. Pep has the same amount of games managed – with City he was in charge for 73 matches and 50 games with Barcelona.

City started Wednesday’s game off strong and you could see that they weren’t here to play games. Strikes opportunities were being made early on in the game from City’s side.

Bernado put City in the lead and found the back of the net halfway into the first half.

He did so again 15min later making it harder for Madrid to catch up.

5 min into the second half Dias got the first yellow card of the night. Real Madrid soon followed with defender Carvajal.

City once again scored with an assist from De Bruyne. Akanji knocked the ball in the direction of the goalpost but VAR had to step in for a possible offside after Militao deflects the ball into his own net.

City finished off the night with another goal from striker Julian Alvarez ending the night off with a 5-1 aggregate from both matches.

Who knows what’s going to happen during the Champions League final on the 10th of June? Who will you back during the last match of the season? Place your bet on Betway

Derby Della Madonnina

The second semi-final match of the Champions League season took place on Wednesday night. A Derby Della Madonnina between the prominent Milanese club’s Inter Milan and AC Milan.

A very big deal for Italian football as Channel 4 paid £1.5m to air a full season of Serie A back in 1992. Premier League was paid £304m for a 5-year airing right contract by Sky Sports.

Back in the day, a roundup of the past week’s football news would air during the Gazzetta Football Italia magazine show on a Saturday morning. Sundays would follow with a live football match.

An average Serie A stadium attendance is around 29 000, Bundesliga sits just over 42 000 and Premier League just makes 40 000 seats full.

There could be a few factors that are contributing to the low attendance number for the Italian League. Many say it could be poor stadium infrastructure, financial scandals, and possible match-fixing could be the contributors.

70 000 is the average capacity for home matches of Inter Milan and AC Milan. Clearly no problem for these teams to fill the seats of their stadium.

Since 1992 Serie A’s income massively increased to around £825m but recently it was admitted by Milan CEO Giorgio Furlani that they are struggling to keep up with Premier League clubs in the transfer market.

Between Inter and Milan, these clubs have both bagged 10 European Cups and Champions League titles. Milan held the title in 2003 and 2007 while Inter had the title in 2010. However its not certain that they are even guaranteed a spot in the next Champions League season.

Fourth and fifth place on the Serie A table are held by Inter and Milan respectively with only 4 games to left play. Both could qualify for the final league position if Lazio and Juventus slip up in any way. But with the current standings, one of these football clubs could evidently miss out on the next season if no changes are made.

Wednesday’s match was clearly important for these teams and Italian football collectively. A sea of red could be seen spanning 3 sides of the San Siro stadium as fans showed their support.

This game was more than just about the derby taking place but a statement being made by the fans. The grandeur of Italian club football is back.

Fans were going crazy as Inter immediately took over and found the back of the net twice in the first 15min.

The goals came from Edin Dzeko and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

Milan on the other hand was fighting a losing battle as they lost Ismael Bennacer in the 17th min to a knee injury.

After that double score from Inter early in the match, no other goal was made from either side. Inter Milan ended the derby with a win holding onto their 4th place in the league.

What will the second leg of the semi-final hold in for Inter and Milan next week Tuesday? Who will you back? Place your bet on Betway.

Man United v Villa – Matchweek 34

Man United clashed with Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Sunday.

In their last 2 Premier League matches, United lost to Villa.

Last season, they met at this exact fixture and Villa won 1-0.

The title for the longest unbeaten fixtures on home turf is held by the Red Devils with 14. The last game lost at Old Trafford was at the beginning of the season against Brighton.

Out of their last 9 away games, Villa have only lost once at Unai Emery stadium.

The match started off with Villa settling on eleven players with Carlos on the bench for the ninth time in a row.

United made 2 changes since their last game. Wan-Bissaka and Anthony get replaced with Malacia and Sabitzer.

The first attempt is from Rashford. The flag is raised and Rashford walks away disappointed as his ball was received on the wide end.

United Midfielder, Fernandes finally brings it home at the 39th min with a rebound, putting the better team of the night in the lead.

Halftime comes and goes and a few substitutions are dealt by both teams

Frist yellow card gets awarded to home team midfielder Fred and the last one also gets snatched up by United.

The final whistle blows as the home team’s unbeaten title remains intact.

Man United scored 3 points with their home win.

Not moving from 4th place in this match week, United is hopeful to possibly score a spot in the next UEFA Champions season.

Fernandes is also undoubtedly the player of the match with his 6th goal this season.

United is definitely seen as the better team of this match with yet another clean sheet against the away team.

Villa only had half the amount of shots that United managed to make.

United had 6 of those 14 shots on target where Villa only had 1

Possession, passes and fouls were also topped by United.

United is playing their next match tomorrow at 9 against Brighton to whom they lost in the beginning of the season.

UEFA Champions League Qualifiers

Liverpool

Currently in 6th position on the PL table, the task ahead for Liverpool is clear: seize the opportunity in their last 6 fixtures. Two games are with rivals for the qualifiers.

Wednesday’s game against West Ham increased their chances to qualify for the next season. Their 2-1 win at the London Stadium with Cody Gakpo’s strike and Joel Matip’s bullet header left Klopp’s side with 53 points after playing 32 games.

Man United

Man United is up 2 positions from Liverpool on the PL table. With their last 2 matches in the bag, it puts great pressure on the Reds to perform for their next fixtures. But with only 6 points difference, United isn’t out of the woods yet.

The top 4 on the PL table automatically qualify for the Champions League but depending on what happens during the Carabao Cup and the all-Manchester FA Cup finals we might see a different picture.

New Castle

Tying on 59 points but one up from United, Castle is playing against Everton in tonight’s match at the Everton Stadium.

On Sunday, Eddie’s team took a giant leap in the competition, leaving Spurs at the starting line. Murphy, Joelinton, Isak, and Wilson all brought it home with a brilliant 6-1 lead pushing Spurs down the table.

Currently sitting 6 points ahead of Spurs, the Magpies will have to knuckle down in their last 7 games and possibly try to push up their points to 69. That will be their third-highest tally since their second-place finish in the 95-96 season.

Arsenal

Pep’s side left the Gunners defeated on Wednesday night. However, they are still in the race to secure their first Champions League qualification in 7 years.

From having an 8-point lead 5 matches ago, to City closing in on a 2-point difference on the PL table, Arsenal’s top spot might be up for grabs.

But despite their set-back from City, Arsenal is still in the run to qualifying for the Champions League.

Chelsea v Real Madrid Quarter-final

In their last 2 European matches (UEFA Champions League quarterfinals across their last 2 seasons) against Madrid, Chelsea couldn’t win.

In the last 2 seasons, the only UCL game they lost on home turf was against Real Madrid in April 2022

Chelsea started off in Group E. Each team played 6 matches and The Blues won 4 out of those matches.

Kick-off started at 9 on Tuesday evening.

Real Madrid is more on the ball from the start of the game.

Chelsea midfielder, Kante misses the net from right in front! James takes possession of the ball and passes wide to Havertz who then deflects to Kante. The disappointment is seen on the French player’s face after the miss.

Modric is seen handling the ball loosely which cost them possession, twice in 12 min.

Madrid takes a chance at the net but slams it into the post. Great first meaningful attack from their side as Rodrygo opts to go for the goal when he spots an opening on the right-hand side.

Chelsea is booked for a free-kick as Madrid is the first to score a yellow card. Militao and Gallagher collide recklessly, and Fernandez is seen delivering the free kick.

Chelsea midfielder hands Madrid a free-kick as Cucurella is the first Blues player to be booked for a foul. Rodrygo is seen being maliciously tripped by the Spanish player.

One min into extra time, Cucurella tries to make up for his foul. With help from Kovacic and James, Cucurella controls the ball up until the net as Courtois blocks it with both hands.

A goal less opening as Orsato blows the half-time whistle.

A switch is made from Madrid side as Alaba takes Rudiger’s place on the field.

Another yellow card for the home side after Camavinga comes off second when challenged by James. Replays are shown where the midfielder contacts Camavinga foot with his boot.

Finally, the tie is broken as Real striker Rodrygo meets the back of the net from 6 yards out in the 58th min.

A Trio of substations are made as Chelsea tries to claw back from their 3-0 aggregate deficit. Some swop outs are also seen by the away team

Not long after his first goal, the 22-year-old Brazilian player taps in another goal for the away side at Stamford Bridge.

After his goal, Rodrygo is subbed from the game and replaced with Marco Asensio.

Just before the end whistle, Mudryk is booked for a foul after lunging at Modric in midfield.

Disappointed Chelsea walks off. Even with more shots and more ball possession they still didn’t manage to score practically handing Madrid the ticket to the UCL semi-finals.

This will be the 11 time that Real Madrid will take part in the semi’s out of the last 13 season.
